What is Wrong with this Photograph?

Some time ago Paul Cyr took this shot. Click to enlarge it and determine what seems wrong? Look at the relationship of the three blades of the propeller and the size of each blade. Should they not be equal distances apart and shouldn't each blade be the same size?

Take a few minutes to watch these videoes about shutters and how they work and think of the following bit of information about the photograph. Paul was trying to freeze the entire propeller in order to see if it could be done using his big Nikon D700. The photograph was shot at 1/6400 of a second which is really, really fast.

Why do you think the blades don't appear to be equal sizes or proportional spaced as they are in real life? Why aren't they all distorted equally? Why is the bottom blade the most distorted and why does the right most blade appear to be the widest of the three.

After you have come up with a possible explanation , click the following link to read more!

Photograph of the Day

Photography by Paul Cyr

Paul Cyr won "The Photo of the Day" (the winner's gallery) at Imaging Resource website!  You'll have to read more about this on going contest there.  The direct link to Paul's entry is at August 8th, 2010.

The funny thing is that my Uncle, who lives in Gainesville, FL, alerted me to Paul's entry.... It turns out that he too had a photograph selected back on November 15th, 2009.

Do I sense a challenge coming from Northern Maine?  I hope so... get you best photographs out and submit! We can easily take on that Gainesville Club!
